About

I’m a designer and illustrator based in Portland, Oregon. I spent most of my career in nonprofit journalism, including seven years as a Creative Director, working across editorial illustration, design, art direction, and web projects. Lately, I’ve been working independently for publications, organizations, and other clients.

Sites

Candice Bernd

WordPress · Journalist portfolio & book launch

candicequestions.com

Candice is an investigative journalist with a book on the way, and she had a month to get her site ready for the launch. I started by customizing an off-the-shelf book-promotion theme so we could quickly explore color, typography, and branding. Once those were settled, I rebuilt the site entirely in Blocksy using the block editor and custom snippets. I turned her awards and clips into editable collections with drag-and-drop ordering, added automatic featured-image cropping, and integrated a newsletter signup to help build her audience ahead of the launch.

Troy Page Films

WordPress · Filmmaker Portfolio Renovation

troypagefilms.com

Troy is a filmmaker whose portfolio site lost its theme in a crash, leaving him stuck with a bare-bones fallback. He brought me two mockups: one with the expanding video player and other features he wanted, and another with the visual style and layout he preferred. I combined the two approaches in Blocksy, using custom snippets to recreate the requested interactions, then carried the design through his project pages. Projects, testimonials, and FAQs are now easy for him to edit, and “Start a Project” opens a contact form from anywhere on the site. The result gives him the visual presentation he wanted without sacrificing the ability to manage the site himself.

Truthout
Site Redesign

Art Direction · Design · 2018

I worked on three major iterations of Truthout’s website over the years, taking a lead role in the most recent redesign. I coordinated testing and stakeholder sign-off on the first WordPress migration, then art directed the site’s current design. I briefed and directed an outside designer, working between editorial priorities and what the development team could build. After that version launched, I designed additional features for the site as needed.
